Bruxelas, 29 de julho de 2010 – A população da União Europeia, em 1˚de janeiro de 2010, alcançou 501 milhões de habitantes contra os 499,7 milhões do ano precedente. A informação foi divulgada pelo Eurostat, departamento de estatísticas da UE.
O aumento é resultado de um crescimento natural de 0,5 milhões (1%) e de um saldo migratório de 0,9 milhões (1,7%). Em 2009, foram registrados 5,3 milhões de nascimentos, índice que apresenta uma ligeira diminuição em comparação a 2008.
O crescimento da população na União Européia, portanto, é devido à imigração, principalmente em Luxemburgo e Suécia. Na Itália, segundo o levantamento, os fluxos diminuíram de 7,3% para 5,3%.
